It is a modern university, the largest of all Scottish universities. The university has three large colleges. The three colleges are not only well received academically, but also widely recognized by the top employers in the UK and internationally for their teaching and graduates. Universities offer innovative and practical undergraduate and graduate courses in business, health and science and technology. The University of Glasgow Caledonia (GCU) has more than 40 professional research centers. In 2008, GCU was rated as an international leading and excellent research institution.
The university has one of the most modern and student-centered campuses in the UK. In 2010, GCU won the Scottish international student best service award in the international student poll, and the school's outstanding service for overseas students won the times higher education award in 2008.
As of 2012, Glasgow University of California had about 17000 students, including 1500 international students from more than 100 countries. The school is also a pioneer in building teaching links between Scotland and China. Since 2002, the Software Engineering Laboratory of the school of engineering and computer, University of Glasgow and California has been conducting joint research projects with East China University of science and technology in Shanghai, China. Since then, the two universities have maintained research cooperation, exchanges between scholars and researchers, and jointly set up joint doctoral courses and organize academic conferences.

The school is ranked first in the UK and second in the world in terms of international students' experience of campus life. In 2007, the University of Glasgow and California rose to 44th out of 120 British universities in the guardian. The Sunday Times University Guide (2007) commented that "the University of Glasgow and California offers a large number of outstanding higher education majors".
The school is located in the centre of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland with a population of more than 620000 and one of the most desirable places to live, study and work in the world. It used to be known for its shipbuilding industry, and in 2012 it has transformed into a fashionable and modern European city. The city is preparing to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
